As a Black first time mother in the ER I was dismissed by Black nurses and finally a Black doctor and told I was fine and faking. Crystal, a White midwife found FIVE fibroids larger than my baby. The doctor and ultrasound tech missed FIVE large fibroids during the same appt that Crystal found them. She was professional and kind even when the ppl that looked like me kept insisting that I was making the symptoms up. She was so very professional as she went toe to toe with the doctor who still insisted that I was not at any risk and I was lying about my sx's. Before Crystal stepped in they had already prepared me for discharge. Ultimately, Crystal was absolutely correct I was labeled high risk and followed by a fetal maternal specialist from that point forward.
