For nearly 20 years, I searched for answers as to why I felt so awful, and despite living near the Texas Medical Center in Houston, TX, I was dismissed because of my weight or mental health history. Finally, I had an appointment with Dr. McCracken. It took her all of two appointments to diagnose me with MCAS, a disorder that is frequently missed and less understood. She looked at the whole picture rather than focusing on a single set of symptoms. My quality of life has drastically improved to the point that I was stable enough to start exercising allowing me to lose weight, and stabilizing my Mast Cells also stabilized my mood. The only medications that I now need are MCAS related.
