I had been having heavy and painful periods since I was in middle school. In highschool I was diagnosed with PCOS, it was still very new at the time and I had all the rare symptoms! My doctor was at the forefront of research, and I felt like a science experiment with her. I gave up on doctors at that point. By the time I was finishing college, I was having 3 month long periods when I had them and they were painful and heavy. Cue 5 years of trying to find someone who could help. I eventually ended up having an unnecessary appendectomy, because my ovary was mistaken for an inflamed appendix, and the surgeon offered to "take a look" while she was in the area of my uterus to see if she saw anything. She took pictures, the pictures went with me to a new obgyn, who decided I had Adenomyosis. She didn't want to do a hysterectomy, and had me taking continuous birth control to try to keep it under wraps. If I missed one pill though I was miserable for months. I eventually made my was to Dr. Eaker. I was nervous, if you look him up you may be too, but he was the kindest and best doctor I had seen to that point. He took my reams of documentation on what had been done and tried, read it all while I sat in the room with my mom - now years out of college and unemployable because the pain was too much too often - and when he looked up he just said, "your quality of life matters. I have two things that are different that I'd like to try if you'll let me, but if you just want a hysterectomy we'll do it. Each thing will take at least 3 months to try. " I let him try, and being fair it did help - but if I made and missteps again, by uterus would go into fill rebellion mode. After a year I was done. Literally within a week in had a total hysterectomy, performed by him. No guilt trip. No attempts to talk me out of it. No "are you sure?" Just a nod, a reminder that my quality of life counted, and a hysterectomy. He has gone to concierge mode last I checked, but if you are struggling.... It may be worth a try.
